Biography

Sarah’s life is quite interesting if not somewhat complicated. It seems she is the mother of Ethel Mary Perry Cleghorn and not Eliza Cleghorn as listed on the birth certificate. Sarah claims she was married to a man called Mr Perry. She claims he drowned just before Ethel was born. And yet there is no trace of her marrying until her marriage to Henry Thomas Graves. On the marriage certificate she has put herself down as a widow, and that her first husband died on llth October 1894. She also went under the name Sarah Jane Cleghorn Perry. If this was so then why did Eliza register the child as being hers? One can only surmise that to be nineteen years old, pregnant and unmarried in those days would have been really frowned upon to say the least and it was not uncommon for the Grandmother to raise her daughter’s child, but it is unusual to find a blatant falsifying of a birth certificate. According to her family, Sarah was married to a Mr Perry, before marrying Henry Graves. After Sarah married, Ethel took the surname of Graves, but to complicate things more the Hampden School records list her as Ethel May Graves, born 12 June 1896. The correct birth date for Ethel was 18th December 1894.

The Cemetery that Sarah is buried in is directly opposite the old Moa Creek Hotel in a rather barren field. It appears that the Graves family have placed a new headstone on Sarah’s grave, but most of the others (what is left of them) are suffering from neglect and disrepair. It is still classed as a Public Cemetery although the last burial was in 1945.

Just down the road from the cemetery there is a place known as Graves Gully, where part of the stone cottage that Sarah lived in still remains. Further around the base of the hill are signs of another cottage with just a chimney remaining. Apparently there were lots of trees around but these have been cleared over the years, which give a rather barren and bleak impression.
