John Bedwell King and Martha King

John Bedwell King was born on 30 October 1814. On 13 May 1834 in Great Brington John married Martha Wykes, when both the bride and groom were aged just nineteen. Martha was the youngest of nine children to fellow Brington residents William Wykes (occupation: Keeper of an Estate) and Hannah Bettel. The estate where William Wykes worked was probably the Spencer estate.

Great Brington

Seven years after their marriage, the 1841 English census discovered John and Martha living four miles from Great Brington in the small village of Harlestone, where John was a farmer living with his wife, their three children - Jane (4), Sarah (2), and Charles (3 months) - and a fifteen year old servant girl named Lucy England. Their eldest daughter, Frances (5), was not in the house that day, as she was staying at the Brington house of her grandfather, William Wykes, and his second wife, Frances Nicholls, who had also been widowed. Tragically, two years after the census was taken, 28 year old John Bedwell King died on 31 January 1843 from 'inflammation in the bowels'. Today, the two most common diseases under this umbrella term are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. He was buried with his parents.
