John and Frances made their home at Motonau before moving to live at Hawkswood in 1859.Frances Caverhills brother Charles (Charley) King lived and worked at Motonau before going to live at Hawkswood where he became the Caverhills residentmanager.
In 1872 the Caverhills moved to Highfield Station, and in 1877 they left for the North Island settling near New Plymouth where they farmed until early 1897 They returned to Christchurch shortly before their deaths in 1897.
In 1867 Charley King married Agnes Curle, her father was the head shepherd at Hawkswood. In 1872, Caverhill purchased High-Field at Waiau
